Painting Your Bedroom? 3 Steps To Take

If you have never painted the interior of a house before but you want to try to save some money and tackle the job all by yourself then you've got some work cut out for you. While it may seem like an easy task to do, if you want to do it right then there are several things you will want to do beforehand. From getting the right type of paint to prepping your room, here are three steps that you should take.

Step 1: Buy Quality Paint

You may think that all latex paint is created equal until you start actually painting with it. While home improvement stores may sell gallons of paint at discounted rates, if you want a high-quality product that goes on smoothly then you should go to a professional paint store. Custom paint stores, in particular, are great because they tend to not only offer great products, but they also have a knowledgable staff that can help answer any questions for you.

For instance, if you are painting a black wall a white color then you will want a thicker paint that has either a primer built into it or you will want to just get a primer in addition to it. The paint store staff will be able to sell you all of the paint you need, tell you how much you need, and show you any other repaint products you will need for the job.

Step 2: Clean Everything

One step that a lot of people fail to take before they paint a room is to clean off all of the walls. You may not realize it but dust and dirt can build up on your walls which can make it hard for your paint to adhere smoothly to them. For instance, if you have a lot of dust on the walls and you roll on a layer of paint, then you may end up with clumps of dust in your paint on your walls. A few hours before you paint, wipe down your walls with just water and some soap and then let them air dry.

Step 3: Prep Work

One of the hardest parts about painting any room is the prep work involved. You will need to tape off everywhere that you aren't painting. For instance, if you aren't painting your ceilings the same color as your walls then you will need to tape them off. Additionally, you will need to tape off your windows, doors, and baseboards. Once you have taped everything off, you will also want to lay tarps down on the floor so that paint doesn't drip on them and cause permanent damage.
